FORT DELAWARE STATE PARK

Your trip to Fort Delaware will be an event to remember. While defending the critical Delaware Valley during the Civil War, Fort Delaware also served as a prison camp for thousands of Confederate soldiers captured throughout the war. The fortress also saw duty during the Spanish American War, where she was the key in a 'Three Fort' defense made up of Fort Delaware, Fort Dupont and Fort Mott (NJ). Fort Delaware was active until WWII, and her guns were never challenged.

Board a passenger ferry for a 20 minute ride across the Delaware River to Pea Patch Island, home of Fort Delaware.

You may take the tram from the ferry dock to the entrance of the fort. Cross the moat, enter the fort and take a self-guided tour of the facility. Have conversations with authentically dressed park interpreters who can offer insights on the history of Fort Delaware. For a small fee, you may also register for special hands-on activities while on the island.

Remember, due to the age of the structure, persons with physical disabilities may be limited to the lower level of the fort.

The first Ferry leaves at 10 am from Delaware City. The last tram leaves at 5:30 pm from Fort Delaware back to Delaware City.

Parties up to 20 people can make reservations online. Groups of 20 or more must contact the reservation center or the park to make a reservation.
